Aluminum Cans Build Habitat for Humanity Homes (ACBHHH), now Cans for Cash, is a partnership between the Aluminum Association and Habitat for Humanity International. A national recycling network consisting of more than 530 Habitat affiliates and 2,200 recycling centers has been established. Since 1998, the program has raised over $2.5 million dollars through aluminum can recycling and an additional $1.5 million through grants. The goal of the program is to promote aluminum can usage and recycling by using the money from recycled cans to build Habitat houses.
There are hundreds of Habitat "affiliates" across the country – there is likely one in your community and there are several ways that Novelis can help these Habitat affiliates: monetary donations, volunteers for building and fundraising and introducing them to the Cans for Cash program and the benefits of recycling.
Since its beginning in 1997, Cans for Cash has grown significantly. Novelis' involvment has also grown. To date, twelve Novelis affiliates actively particpate in programs established by their local Habitat for Humanity chapter. Novelis has even worked with Habitat to set up a similar program in Korea. Novelis is continuously looking to expand the program even further though. Novelis looks forward to the opportunity to expand in North America and also globally.
